The State Higher Education Executive Officers is pleased to announce the SHEEO
Higher Education Policy Conference (formerly known as the SHEEO Professional
Development Conference).
This annual professional conference (formerly known as the SHEEO Professional Development Conference) is a forum for collaborative discussion and networking by national and state higher education policy leaders. Designed by the SHEEO community, plenary and breakout
sessions address critical, crosscutting topics and issues on national and state higher education
policy agendas.
Speakers and topics for the plenary sessions include:
- Ralph Cavanaugh , National Resources Defense Council, on global warming and
energy use
- Andreas Schleicher , OECD, on international competition, “ Is the Sky the Limit to Educational Performance?”
- Hilary Pennington , Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, on serving the needs of disadvantaged young adults; followed by a panel of state policy and project leaders
- Gordon Davies , former SHEEO in Virginia and Kentucky, leading a discussion of campus security, safety, and risk assessment, and reflecting on his role as one of eight members
of the panel appointed by Virginia Governor Tim Kaine to investigate the 2007 Virginia
Tech shootings
- David Longanecker , former SHEEO, former assistant secretary for postsecondary education at the U.S. Department of Education , and current WICHE president, moderating a panel of West Coast SHEEOs on higher education in the rapidly changing western states
- Presidential candidates and campaign staff have been invited to speak about their higher education agendas as part of a federal update and national policy discussion.
Breakout sessions organized by state academic affairs, finance, and government relations officers will focus on:
- How states can compete academically and financially in a global higher
education environment
- The Green Campus, and how it can be supported
- State strategies to meet adult education needs more effectively
- How do states pay for “doubling the numbers”?
- Student/parent communications about college access
- P-20 initiatives—how much reform is enough?
- Creative financing and deferred maintenance
- Getting serious about assessing postsecondary learning outcomes
- Reporting about performance ― what does it mean to be transparent?
- Communicating about accountability to different audiences
- GRCO, SHEAO, and SHEFO Roundtables
- Regional Breakfasts for MHEC, NEBHE, SREB, and WICHE
